The drawing
Every MECA member whose membership is current on 31 December 2026 is entered automatically into a drawing held in January 2027. One name will be drawn to receive a vintage Brown Junior .60, donated to the Association by Rich Kacmarsky.
There is no form to fill in and nothing extra to pay — being a member in good standing on the closing date is the only condition. If you are not a member yet, or your dues have lapsed, join or renew here before 31 December 2026 to be eligible.
The engine
The Brown Junior is generally credited as the engine that brought powered model flight within reach of the ordinary modeller. Designed by William L. "Bill" Brown and built by Junior Motors Corporation of Philadelphia from the mid-1930s, it was the first American model aircraft engine to be manufactured and sold in real numbers, and it set the pattern that the rest of the industry followed.
The sectional drawing above is a period illustration showing the engine's spark-ignition layout — the finned cylinder and cooling jacket, the timer and points assembly on the right, and the gravity-fed fuel tank feeding the needle valve.
