The drawing
Every MECA member whose membership is current on 31 December 2026 is entered automatically into a drawing held in January 2027. One name will be drawn to receive a vintage Brown Junior .60, donated to the Association by Rich Kacmarsky.
There is no form to fill in and nothing extra to pay — being a member in good standing on the closing date is the only condition. If you are not a member yet, or your dues have lapsed, join or renew here before 31 December 2026 to be eligible.
The engine
The Brown Junior is generally credited as the engine that brought powered model flight within reach of the ordinary modeler. Designed by William L. "Bill" Brown and built by Junior Motors Corporation of Philadelphia from the mid-1930s, it was the first American model aircraft engine to be manufactured and sold in real numbers, and it set the pattern that the rest of the industry followed.
This Brown Junior engine, serial number D9589 consists of a 1939 crankcase with the early Hurleman timer. The cylinder assembly is a 1939 assembly. A Woody Bartelt spun aluminum fuel tank has been added. This tank is extremely hard to find and will work with all types of fuel. Finally a Herb Wahl accessory exhaust has been added. This engine will look great as a display or in the nose of an old timer free flight plane.
